Conveyor fire shutters for baggage handling system

Gatwick Airport is the UK’s second largest airport and the busiest single-runway airport in the world. It serves more than 200 destinations in 90 countries for more than 38 million passengers a year.

The challenge

Hart Door Systems was chosen by contractor Beumer Group UK Limited and Crisplant to integrate a series of ﬁre shutters into the new baggage handling system within Gatwick Airport's £183.9 million redevelopment of the South Terminal Pier 1.

The redevelopment of the South Terminal Pier 1 is part of Gatwick’s strategy to become London’s airport of choice. With state of the art technology, Gatwick aims to not only enhance the passenger experience but to deliver high operating eﬃciencies for the airport and airlines who use it.

The solution

Hart developed and implemented six electrically-operated fire roller shutters with 60 min ﬁre integrity barrier, compromising of a 6mm powder coated steel frame, intumescent seal for the return belt, sealing heavy angle brackets to inﬁll expansion allowances and allow a ﬂat face for the ﬁre roller shutter to close on to. The two Crisbag conveyor ﬁre roller shutters and four Crisbelt conveyor ﬁre roller shutters were installed as part of the conveyor system at London Gatwick South Terminal Pier 1 redevelopment.

The success

The Hart-designed fire shutters at Gatwick were a first for the UK, allowing for a continuous belt and conveyor system which meets very stringent rules required on fire shutters for conveyor systems.
